Hernando County is doing something fairly interesting with their share of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 funds. The County is planning on buying distressed properties and selling them to low-income families. They’re also using some funds to help the poor get into quality rental units.
Of course, local contractors must be thrilled that the plan calls for in-county contractors to be used. One Commissioner claimed the county is “blessed” with some of the best contractors in the state. I’m sure.
As the title suggests, this is a fresh way to think about things and despite the apparent nepotism with the contractor usage, it will go a long way to helping out hardworking people and avoid the problems associated with empty homes.
